Lent

"At the Cross her station keeping, stood the mournful Mother weeping, close to Jesus to the last." - Stabet Mater (The Mother Stood)

Lent is the forty-day liturgical season (excluding Sundays) in preparation for Easter. It is the time leading up to the commemoration of Our Lord's death on Good Friday and His resurrection on Easter Sunday. A penitential season, Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends just before the Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday evening. The week preceding Easter is Holy Week, considered the holiest week of the Church year. More...

In keeping with the Gospel on Ash Wednesday, the Church emphasizes the importance of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, as these actions will help us to best keep this sacred season as we reflect upon the mystery of Christ's passion and death, His freely offering Himself for our salvation.

Catholic-Collectibles offers many items, such as crosses and crucifixes, Pieta statues, Seven Sorrows rosaries, chaplets, framed art, music, videos and books, including the Holy Bible, that will inspire prayerful reflection of the meaning of this holy season.

O come and mourn with me awhile;
See Mary calls us to her side;
O come and let us mourn with her.
Jesus, our Love, is crucified.

In the above traditional Catholic Lenten hymn, Our Lady of Sorrows (Latin: Mater Dolorosa) calls us to share in the depths of her maternal grief, but also in her unshakable faith in the joy of the Resurrection to come when we echo the words of the angel to the women at the tomb: "Christ is risen!" for "Truly He is risen! Alleluia!"
