Read update above!

A young, talented German artist, Bertha Hummel was a student at Munich's famed Academy of Applied Arts who was to have found a religious vocation. Upon her graduation in 1931, she entered the convent taking the name, Maria Innocentia. There, the young sister's talents were encouraged, and it is on her drawings, especially of childlren, that the M.I. Hummel Company was born. More...

Once German publishers discovered and began printing some of her artwork, some in the form of postcards, her charming artwork came to the attention of Franz Goebel, the head of a porcelain company bearing his name. Goebel was seeking a subject for a new line of figurines when he found Sister Maria Innocentia's work, and proposed to Sister Hummel the idea of transforming her drawings into figurines.

The artist worked personally with Goebel Master Sculptors and Painters to create the first Hummel figurines which were introduced in 1935 and met with immediate success.

Today, M.I. Hummel figurines continue to rank among the most beloved collectibles, "a tribute to the spirit of childhood that they so masterfully reflect, and to the talent of a brilliant artist."

Catholic-Collectibles is pleased to be an authorized M.I. Hummel retailer, offering Hummel nativities, nativities for children, charming cherubs and angelic heavenly messengers.

“Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven."
